Over half of small businesses have concerns their internet protection is not effective enough to provide complete security, according to new research.
The survey, conducted by Loudhouse Research for Star Technology Services Ltd, found that 2007 was a record year for small business investment in security products created to protect against intrusion, malicious attack or internet viruses.
Of 300 IT and business managers surveyed, just over half questioned said their current network security system was ‘inadequate’, while a similar number said they found it difficult to keep up-to-date with new security threats, meaning they were left vulnerable to attack.
With the internet’s increased use as a business tool, businesses are increasing left open to threats of spyware, malware, phishing and hackers.
Paul Watson, vice president of product managing and marketing at Star said: “Small and medium-sized businesses should have the right to expect security as standard for all their online activities. They should see internet-based technologies as an opportunity of growth, rather than a threat to survival.”
He added: “As an SMB, it is essential that you have a security solution that meets the individual needs of the business in terms of both protection and budget.
“Rather than continue to invest in security products, resource and knowledge base SMBs need to look to their ISPs to help ensure they minimize their risk from potentially business-ending attacks.”
