British retailers are increasing pressure on politicians to ensure that the EU’s carbon reduction policy is matched with practical ‘green friendly’ action.
While the EU is aiming for a 20% cut in Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, retailers are keen for politicians to reduce VAT on energy efficient products, such as low energy light bulbs, as well as reducing any ‘anti-dumping’ policies on these products.
According to the BRC, retailers are leading the way in improving carbon efficiency and also in encouraging suppliers and customers to do the same.
Retailers are also credited with promoting low price energy efficient products to customers, offering recycling facilities and incentives and working towards industry-wide recyclability labelling.
“UK retailers are way ahead of the game in being innovative and effective in lowering carbon emissions from suppliers, consumers and their own operations,” said Alisdair Gray, BRC director, Brussels.
“They have improved their performance in response to the market and without heavy handed legislation.”
However, retailers believe that European level support would allow them to do more and encourage those across the EU to follow their lead. By making energy efficient products more affordable, for instance, the EU could help convince customers that going green is a priority.
“To help meet European climate change targets, the EU should reduce VAT on energy efficient products and scrap or reduce import tariffs,” he continued.
“This will show the Commission is matching words with action on the environment.”
