Half of UK businesses believe that the blame for poor leadership development rests with senior management, research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has found.

The CIPD’s study examined the programmes used to develop business leaders only to discover negative sentiment prevailed among HR managers – of those surveyed only 41% rated their schemes high quality. Similarly, only 42% of UK business leaders stated satisfaction with what their organisations’ offered.

Other problems identified by the study included the failure of organisations to measure and benchmark the results of leadership development and a lack consistency in the way programmes are deployed across the business.

There is good news however for those classed as ‘high-potential leaders’. Those who fall into this category report greater levels of satisfaction in the UK than anywhere else in the world – 55% UK high potentials said they were satisfied with leadership programmes compared with 37%.

Vanessa Robinson, organisation and resourcing adviser at the CIPD said businesses must work harder to hone their leadership skills.

“A lot of effort is going into developing leaders, and a lot is going right. But this report shows that when it comes to delivering outcomes from leadership development, UK organisations could do better.”
