As London prepares to stage the 2012 Olympics, UK businesses are well placed to win contracts from other global sporting events, a minister has said.

The minister of state for trade & investment, Lord Digby Jones, said that UK businesses should strike while the iron’s hot and take advantage of the high profile of the 2012 Games to make their mark on the global sports sector.

“While the London Olympics are still four years away, major sporting events for 2014 – 2020 are being decided around the world,” he said.

“This represents billions of pounds worth of potential export contracts and I am determined to ensure that British companies are best placed to win these contracts.”

Digby Jones said that the 2012 Games have presented a unique opportunity for the UK to showcase its expertise in staging world class sporting events.

He added: “The ‘UK plc’ profile has never been higher in this sector and now is the right time to plan for new international business and success beyond 2012.”

UK Trade and Investment will hold a conference in Manchester on April 1 – 2 called ‘Winning Beyond 2012’. It will feature leading figures from the global sporting industry and highlight the business opportunities that will arise from major sporting events over the next few years.
