The government has launched a review to investigate potential barriers to next-generation broadband, a technology which is deemed crucial to the UK’s future economical success.

The review will examine potential barriers to widespread roll-out of high-speed broadband and advise how the government can help ensure the transition is as seamless as possible.

Currently, legacy infrastructure in place in the UK will not be able to cope with the extra burden, but the upgrades are deemed necessary for the UK to remain competitive in today’s global economy.

The review will also look at the cost of investment and whether there is a part to play for the public sector, or whether the cost will be shouldered entirely by the private sector.

Business and Competitiveness Minister Shriti Vadera commented: “We need to prepare the way for the UK to adopt new groundbreaking technologies to ensure that we do not get left behind – competitively or technologically.”

The review’s authors are expected to report back to ministers and chancellor Alistair Darling in the autumn.
