It is hoped that the High Level Skills consultation will lead to a pool of applicants with more tailored skills for the industries which they hope to enter.

The consultation is expected to seek industry views on how to raise the skill level of those already in work, and those of graduates looking to enter the workplace.

For some, the announcement couldn’t come soon enough. EEF, the industry body for manufacturers, recently expressed concern that the government’s policy announcements on skills were taking time to take shape.

However, Martin Temple, EEF chairman cautiously welcomed the news of the consultation and said that words now needed to become actions.

“Employers see strong skills in communication, teamwork, and business acumen as key attributes. As such, EEF supports the greater focus on employability and the responsibility of universities are to help deliver on the government’s innovation and enterprise agendas which business and industry strongly supports,” added Temple.
