The developers of a new device which can detect diseases such as cancer faster have received £100,000 to continue its development.

Liverpool University spin-out Palindrom X has received the backing of the Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF) in order to complete the device’s proof of concept phase.

The patented technology is more sensitive than other devices on the market for the detection of cancer and thyroid and heart disease as well as being cheaper, the company says.

Also, diagnosis times should be shorter and it allows doctors to check for multiple substances simultaneously.

Company chairman Phil Goodwin said: “Currently we are using the test for the early detection of thyroid and heart disease but it could also be used to test for cancer and many other conditions.”

“The money from the Liverpool Seed Fund means we can now develop the technology further through a more rigorous and relevant validation procedure.

“Once proven, we can begin the commercialisation process.”

The PalindromX team consists of directors Roger Duggan, Professor Bill Fraser, Professor Jim Gallagher, Dr David McCreavy and chairman Phil Goodwin.
