Increasing workforce efficiency is high on the agenda for many employers this year, according to new research.

The research, released today by recruitment agency Manpower, said almost a quarter of employers put boosting their staff’s productivity rate at the top of their to-do list for 2008.

The issue has leapt from fourth place in 2007, with staff retention moving from first to second place, adapting to new legislation down to third and the introduction of new technology to fourth. Succession planning and wage inflation were also seen as important HR priorities.

The survey also found that one in five public and construction sector employers said their top priority was to adapt to new legislation, with the majority of businesses in the utilities sector adding that they consider succession planning to be their key HR issue, compared to just 6% of the total respondents.

The company’s director, Mark Cahill, said it was important for businesses looking to increase productivity to start on their doorstep.

“We believe one of the key ways to improve workforce productivity is to respect, value and reward your staff.

“We spend time advising many of our clients on not only how to attract and recruit staff, but also how to remunerate, reward and retain their existing workforces,” he said.
