Climatecars, the eco-friendly London taxi firm founded by 2010 Young Gun Nicko Williamson, has made history by launching a fleet of cabs powered entirely by electricity.
The fleet, supplied by Renault, will provide the capital’s first-ever zero-emission minicab service, and has already received public backing from the government.
The cabs will be based at Climatecars’ HQ in central London, drawing on the electricity charging stations championed by mayor Boris Johnson. Climatecars says it plans to install its own charging stations in due course.
Founded in 2006, Climatecars has hitherto relied on a fleet of hybrid vehicles. Williamson, who was also honoured at last year’s Fast Growth Business Awards, hopes his new fleet will take the company’s environmental drive to a new level.
"The addition of the fully electric Renault Fluence to Climatecars’ fleet marks a crucial step towards our aim of being the world's first zero emission car service.
“We are really excited to have partnered with Renault and are looking forward to offering a 100% electric car service to our customers.”
Climate change minister Greg Barker added: “It’s great Climatecars is doing its bit to make London a greener place, by offering a great alternative to the humble black cab.
“Cutting carbon emissions is vital to limit global temperature rises to tackle climate change.”
