VC group Ingenious is planning to launch a new fund dedicated solely to the film industry.

The €150m (£103m) fund will focus on the ‘tail’ of the film cycle avoiding the risks of production and will seek to exploit the distribution and rights of a movie.

It will adopt a ‘slate approach’ backing a distributors entire portfolio as well as acquiring film rights and libraries.

Ingenious says it plans to partner with some of the most commercially successful distributors in Europe and expects to be involved in the marketing of over 100 films.

Duncan Reid, commercial director at Ingenious, said: “Film distribution is one of the most profitable yet under-invested parts of the global film industry.

“The new fund will provide much needed capital for independent distributors looking to build larger film portfolios and improve their bargaining power with broadcasters and DVD retailers.

“For investors, the fund gives diversification and exposure to the most secure revenue stream in film with an attractive risk/return profile.”
